Shirakawago (Japan)

So, the second morning in in Takayama, we packed (again) and checked out. Went to the train station, left one of the small baclpacks in a locker and boarded a bus to Shirakawago which is like an open air museum, a village with a lot of typical Japanese houses, rice crops and deeper in the mountain. We met a couple who is living in Bermuda but the man is Swiss and we were discussing that the Japanese Alps remind us a lot of Switzerland, which is probably the reason for their name. Moreover, there are a lot of tunnels just like in Switzerland. One of the tunnels was 11km long – no light from the outside world!

The village is really cute, made of wood and straw roofs but we had more than 3 hours to spend which was a challenge. We visited a local house, had some tea, bought Japanese “hats” and took the bus back to Takayama.. Then a train to Nagoya on our way back to Tokyo.
